Vertical Floor-standing Heating Expansion Vessel With Pressure Gauge

For closed heating circuits up to 10 bar maximum operating pressure

This vessel is specified for heating systems and has a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar, so the system's safety valve setting must not exceed this value. It is a heating vessel, not a vessel for drinking water systems.

Description and application

The floor standing expansion vessel absorbs the thermal expansion of water in closed heating systems, keeping system pressure within its working range, in volumes from 100 L to 5000 L at a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar. It conforms to EN 13831, has a replaceable EPDM membrane, is shipped pre-charged with nitrogen and fitted with a pressure gauge, and stands on its own legs.

The floor standing expansion vessel from the Eternal line takes up the extra water volume created as a closed heating circuit warms up, so that system pressure stays within its working range and the safety valve is not called on in normal operation. It is available in nominal volumes from 100 L to 5000 L, finished in red, and conforms to EN 13831 with a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar. Inside the vessel, an EPDM membrane of Italian origin separates the system water from the gas cushion. The membrane is replaceable, so it can be renewed during servicing without changing the whole vessel. The vessel is shipped pre-charged with nitrogen, and a pressure gauge is fitted, so pre-charge and system pressure can be checked on site without extra instruments. This size of vessel is chosen for larger heating systems: boiler rooms in apartment blocks and commercial or public buildings, district heating substations, and heat pump or biomass installations where buffer tanks increase the water volume. Where one vessel is not enough, several can be connected to the same system. The vessel stands upright on its own legs, so no wall bracket or separate mounting frame is needed. It is normally connected on the return, close to the suction side of the circulating pump, with space left for reading the gauge and servicing the membrane. Besides the standard connection, the vessel can be supplied with other connection sizes on request. Before filling, a qualified installer sets the pre-charge to the system design.

Questions

What pre-charge pressure should a floor standing expansion vessel have when it is fitted to a closed heating system in a plant room?
A floor standing expansion vessel on a heating system should have its pre-charge set to the static pressure at its connection point, slightly below the system's cold fill pressure. The THERMALINO vessel is shipped pre-charged with nitrogen, and the installer checks the delivered value against the system design and adjusts it before filling. The fitted pressure gauge makes it easy to read the pressure during commissioning and at later service visits.
Why is the pre-charge of a heating expansion vessel set below the system pressure, and must the system pressure exceed it to absorb expansion?
Yes: a heating expansion vessel only takes up expansion once system pressure is above its pre-charge, and that is why the pre-charge is set slightly below the cold fill pressure. With this setting a small reserve of water enters the membrane when the system is filled cold, and that reserve keeps pressure up as the water cools and contracts. If the pre-charge is too high, the membrane stays empty and pressure rises sharply on heating. If it is too low, the vessel is already partly full when cold and has little capacity left.
Should a floor standing expansion vessel on a commercial heating system be connected on the suction side of the circulating pump?
A floor standing expansion vessel is normally connected on the return pipework, close to the suction side of the circulating pump, where the system pressure is most stable. This vessel stands upright on its own legs, so it is set directly on the plant-room floor without a bracket. Any isolating valve between the vessel and the system must be secured against accidental closing, and there should be room to read the pressure gauge and service the membrane.
Will a floor standing expansion vessel still cope if a buffer tank is added to an existing boiler or heat pump system?
A floor standing expansion vessel will only cope with an added buffer tank if it can still take up the expansion of the larger total water volume, so the vessel sizing must be recalculated. If the existing vessel is too small, a larger vessel or a second vessel connected to the same system can make up the difference. The range runs from 100 L to 5000 L, which gives room to match the vessel to the recalculated volume.
How can I tell if the floor standing expansion vessel on a building's heating system is too small or has a failed membrane?
A floor standing expansion vessel that is too small or has a failed membrane shows itself when system pressure rises sharply as the water heats, the safety valve discharges, and pressure drops low when the system cools. The pressure gauge fitted to this vessel makes these swings easy to see. Water at the gas valve points to a failed membrane. Because the vessel is under pressure, a qualified installer should check the pre-charge and the sizing and do any repair.
Can the membrane of a floor standing heating expansion vessel in a boiler room be replaced, or must the whole vessel be changed?
The membrane of this floor standing heating expansion vessel can be replaced, so a worn EPDM membrane can be renewed without changing the whole vessel. The work is done by a qualified installer. The vessel has to be isolated and both the water side and the gas side safely depressurised before it is opened, and the pre-charge is set again before the vessel goes back into service.
