PN16 PPR Pipe (SDR 7.4)
We recommend this PN16 pipe for cold water service. For central heating and hot water lines, use glass-fibre reinforced PP-R pipe, which expands less with heat.

Description and application
The PN16 PPR pipe (SDR 7.4) is a PP-R pressure pipe to EN ISO 15874-2, joined by socket fusion and recommended for cold water supply lines in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. It is supplied from Ø20 to Ø110 mm in 4 m lengths, in white, grey double strip and green double strip.
The PN16 PPR pipe in the Eternal line is a pressure pipe of PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer) with SDR 7.4, made to EN ISO 15874-2. It is made only from prime PP-R raw material, contains no BPA and releases no harmful substances into the water it carries, which makes it a hygienic choice for drinking water. The plastic bore does not corrode, the pipe needs no maintenance, and it is designed for a service life of 50 years under the conditions given in the technical data sheet. We recommend this PPR pipe PN16 for cold water: mains, risers and branch lines in houses, apartment blocks, hotels and offices, as well as irrigation, cooling water and other cold water lines in industry. The material has an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C, but for central heating and hot water we recommend glass-fibre reinforced PP-R pipe, which expands less with heat and is easier to support over long hot runs. The pipe is joined by socket fusion. The pipe end and the fitting socket are heated on a welding tool and pushed together, so the joint becomes one piece of PP-R without glue, threads or sealing material. This makes installation quick and clean, with a small set of tools. Fusion joints on pressure lines are made and pressure-tested by a qualified installer. The range runs from Ø20x2.8 to Ø110x15.1 mm in 4 m lengths, in white, grey double strip and green double strip. The pipes are manufactured in Türkiye to THERMALINO quality standards.

Questions
- Can I use PN16 PPR pipe for central heating or domestic hot water, or should it be kept for cold water lines?
- We recommend PN16 PPR pipe for cold water lines; for central heating and hot water, glass-fibre reinforced PP-R pipe is the right choice. The PP-R material has an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C, but a plain PP-R pipe expands considerably when heated, while a glass-fibre reinforced pipe expands less and stays easier to support and route over long hot runs.
- What working pressure can a PN16 PPR pipe handle when used as the cold water riser in an apartment building?
- A PN16 PPR pipe belongs to nominal pressure class PN16, which means 16 bar for cold water service. The permissible working pressure falls as water temperature rises and depends on the required service life, so the full pressure, temperature and service life table is in the technical data sheet. For a riser, the designer checks the highest static pressure in the building plus any pressure surges against that table.
- What is the internal diameter of a 32 mm PN16 PPR pipe, and which size in inches does it correspond to?
- A 32 mm PN16 PPR pipe has a 32 mm outside diameter and a 4.4 mm wall, giving an internal diameter of 23.2 mm, and it is the size usually traded as 1 inch. PP-R pipes are named by their outside diameter, so a pipe is measured across the outside, not the bore. Since 1 inch is 25.4 mm, the inch name is a trade size rather than an exact conversion. The wall thickness of every size from Ø20 to Ø110 mm is given in the size table.
- What is the maximum water velocity I should design for in PN16 PPR pipe on a cold water line without recirculation?
- Flow velocity in PN16 PPR pipe is set by the system design and the local plumbing code rather than by one fixed limit for the pipe. Higher velocity increases noise, pressure loss and pressure surges when valves close quickly. On a cold water line without recirculation, a higher velocity may be accepted at peak demand where noise and pressure loss allow it, but lines feeding quick-closing valves call for lower velocities. Our team can help with sizing.
- Is PPR pipe stronger than PVC pipe for a pressurised cold water supply line in a building?
- Whether PP-R or PVC fits better depends on the job, but PN16 PPR pipe is joined by socket fusion, so pipe and fitting become a single piece of PP-R without solvent cement. The pipe has a thick SDR 7.4 wall, a PN16 pressure class and an operating temperature of 70 °C with a maximum of 95 °C. It is made to EN ISO 15874-2, the standard for plastic piping systems for hot and cold water installations.
- How is PN16 PPR pipe joined and installed when running new cold water lines in a commercial building?
- PN16 PPR pipe is joined by socket fusion: the pipe end and the fitting socket are heated on a fusion tool and pressed together, forming a homogeneous joint. Lines are run with PP-R fittings of the same system, supported with clips and allowed to expand where needed. Because the line runs under pressure, the fusion joints and the pressure test are carried out by a qualified installer.
