PN20 PPR Pipe (SDR 6)
This PN20 plain PP-R pipe may carry hot water to taps, showers and other draw-off points as well as cold water. For central heating and radiator circuits, glass-fibre reinforced PPR pipe is recommended, because its lower thermal expansion suits continuous heating service.

Description and application
THERMALINO PPR pipe PN20 (SDR 6) is a PP-R pressure pipe to EN ISO 15874-2 for hot and cold domestic water supply, supplied in 4 m lengths from Ø20 to Ø110 mm and joined by socket fusion. As a ppr hot water pipe it serves taps and showers at an operating temperature of 70 °C, maximum 95 °C.
The PN20 PPR Pipe (SDR 6) from the THERMALINO Eternal line is a thick-walled pressure pipe in PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer), made to EN ISO 15874-2. Its SDR 6 wall gives it the PN20 nominal pressure class, so it can carry hot water as well as cold. It is made from prime-grade PP-R raw material, and the material does not release harmful substances such as BPA into the water, which keeps drinking water hygienic. The pipe is intended for domestic hot and cold water: supply lines, risers and branches to taps, showers and other draw-off points in houses, apartment buildings and commercial buildings. The operating temperature is 70 °C, with a maximum of 95 °C. Permissible pressure falls as temperature rises, so the pressure at each temperature and service life is given in the technical data sheet. For central heating and radiator circuits, a glass-fibre reinforced PPR pipe is the recommended choice because of its lower thermal expansion. The pipe is supplied in 4 m straight lengths in nine sizes, from Ø20x3.4 to Ø110x18.3 mm, and in white, grey double strip and green double strip. Sizes are given as outside diameter and wall thickness, in millimetres. Installation is by socket fusion with PP-R fittings: the pipe end and fitting socket are heated on a welding tool and pushed together to form one homogeneous, leak-tight joint without threads, sealants or glue. Socket fusion makes installation quick and clean, and the finished system needs no maintenance during its service life.

Questions
- Is a PN20 PPR pipe acceptable for hot water distribution to taps and showers in an apartment building?
- Yes, the PN20 PPR pipe (SDR 6) is suitable for domestic hot water distribution to taps, showers and other draw-off points. It has an operating temperature of 70 °C, with a maximum of 95 °C, and is made to EN ISO 15874-2. The permissible pressure at a given temperature and service life is listed in the technical data sheet. For central heating circuits, glass-fibre reinforced PPR pipe is recommended instead.
- What is the difference between PN16 and PN20 PPR pipe when choosing pipe for a residential plumbing installation?
- PN16 PPR pipe is recommended for cold water only, while PN20 PPR pipe (SDR 6) can carry both cold and domestic hot water. The PN20 pipe has a thicker wall relative to its diameter (SDR 6), which gives it the higher pressure class needed for hot water service, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C.
- How many mm is a 3/4 inch PPR pipe when replacing old threaded steel pipework in a house?
- A 3/4 inch PPR pipe usually means the Ø25 mm pipe, which in PN20 has a 4.2 mm wall. PPR pipe is sized by outside diameter in millimetres, and the inch sizes are trade names, not exact conversions: Ø20 mm usually goes with 1/2 inch and Ø32 mm with 1 inch. Confirm the thread size of the transition fittings when connecting to existing threaded pipework.
- What is the internal diameter of a 32 mm PN20 PPR pipe used for a riser or apartment main?
- The nominal internal diameter of a Ø32 mm PN20 PPR pipe is 21.2 mm, based on its 5.4 mm wall (32 minus twice 5.4). Because the SDR 6 wall is thick, the bore is smaller than in lower pressure classes of the same outside diameter, so take this into account when sizing for flow. Dimensional tolerances are in the technical data sheet.
- What type of PPR pipe should be used for hot water supply and what type for central heating circuits?
- PN20 plain PPR pipe is used for domestic hot water supply, while glass-fibre reinforced PPR pipe is recommended for central heating circuits. Plain PP-R expands more with heat, and the reinforced pipe's lower thermal expansion makes it the better choice for continuous heating service. For hot water to taps and showers, the PN20 pipe has an operating temperature of 70 °C, maximum 95 °C.
- How is a PN20 PPR pipe joined on site and which fittings does it work with in a plumbing system?
- The PN20 PPR pipe is joined by socket fusion with PP-R fittings, giving one homogeneous joint without threads, sealants or glue. The installer heats the pipe end and the fitting socket on a welding tool, then pushes them together and holds them while the joint cools. Transition fittings with threads connect the system to taps, valves and metal pipework. A qualified installer carries out the work and the pressure test.
