PPR Ball valve full bore

PN25 rated for hot water and heating circuits

With nominal pressure PN25, operating temperature 70 °C and maximum temperature 95 °C, this valve can be fused into hot water and heating lines as well as cold water lines. The permitted pressure at each temperature is given in the technical data sheet.

Description and application

The PPR ball valve full bore is a quarter-turn shut-off valve that is socket-fused into PP-R pipelines and opens or closes hot or cold water with a 90° turn of the handle. Its brass CW617N ball and PTFE seals give a tight shut-off, and because the bore through the ball is full size, the open valve does not narrow the flow.

The PPR ball valve full bore is an on/off valve for PP-R pipeline systems. A 90° turn of the handle opens or closes the line, and it is made for frequent opening and closing over the life of the installation. When the valve is open, the bore through the ball is full size, so it does not narrow the flow or add a noticeable pressure loss to the run. The body is PP-R, and the ball and insert are brass CW617N. PTFE seals keep the shut-off tight even at high system pressure. The valve conforms to EN ISO 16135 and is rated PN25, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. It comes in Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50, Ø63, Ø75 and Ø90, in white, grey or green to match the pipe. You can use it on hot and cold water supply lines and in heating circuits, as a main shut-off, on risers and on branch lines. It also works as an isolation point in front of meters, tanks and equipment. It is made for isolation, not for throttling or balancing. The valve has socket fusion ends. The installer cuts the pipe square, heats the pipe end and the valve socket together with a fusion welding tool and pushes them together straight, without twisting. The valve stays in the open position during welding. The joint must cool fully before the system is pressurised. This makes a permanent, homogeneous joint with the PP-R pipe and fittings, with no threads or sealants.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold water supply in houses and apartment buildings
  • Main shut-off, riser and branch isolation in plumbing systems
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Central heating and radiator circuits, within operating temperature 70 °C, maximum 95 °C
  • Cooling and chilled water lines
  • Irrigation and agricultural water lines
  • Industrial water and process lines, subject to the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheet

Questions

When specifying a PPR ball valve for a water riser, is there any difference between a full bore and a full port ball valve?
There is no difference: full bore and full port both mean a ball valve whose bore matches the internal diameter of the pipe, and the THERMALINO PPR ball valve full bore is this type. A reduced or standard bore valve has a hole one size smaller, which narrows the flow and increases pressure loss. A full bore valve keeps the flow path the same size as the pipe.
Can a full bore PPR ball valve replace a gate valve as the isolation valve in a radiator heating system running at around 70 °C?
Yes, the PPR ball valve full bore can replace a gate valve for isolation in a heating system, provided the system stays within its ratings: PN25, operating temperature 70 °C, maximum 95 °C. Because the bore is full size, it does not narrow the flow when open. It shuts off with a 90° turn, and PTFE seals give a tight closure. It is an on/off valve. Use a dedicated regulating valve for balancing or throttling.
Can a PPR ball valve full bore be used as the main water shut-off valve in a house plumbed in PP-R pipe?
Yes, the PPR ball valve full bore is suitable as the main water shut-off in a PP-R installation, because it closes the whole line with a quarter turn and does not narrow the flow when open. It is socket-fused directly into the pipe, rated PN25 and made to EN ISO 16135. Fit it where the installer can reach it easily, since it must be closed quickly in an emergency.
How do I know which size PPR ball valve I need for a 32 mm PP-R pipe run in an apartment building?
A PPR ball valve is chosen by the outside diameter of the PP-R pipe it is fused to, so a Ø32 pipe takes the Ø32 valve. The THERMALINO PPR ball valve full bore comes in Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50, Ø63, Ø75 and Ø90. Because the bore through the ball is full size, there is no need to choose a larger valve to make up for a narrower passage.
What causes a PPR ball valve to leak in a domestic hot water line, and who should repair it?
A leaking PPR ball valve is usually caused by a faulty fusion joint, a worn stem seal, or dirt or scale on the ball and seats, and a qualified installer should repair it. A bad joint leaks at the socket. A worn stem seal leaks around the handle. Dirt on the seats lets water pass when the valve is closed. Fused joints cannot be tightened, so the installer isolates the line and replaces the affected section by socket fusion.
