PPR Elbow 45° f/m

One spigot end: fuses straight into a fitting or valve

One end of this elbow is a socket for the pipe. The other end is a spigot, and it must be fused into the socket of another fitting or a valve, never onto a pipe. This lets the installer turn the line by 45° with no piece of pipe between the elbow and the next component.

Description and application

The PPR Elbow 45° f/m is a PP-R socket fusion elbow that turns a hot or cold water line by 45°. It has a socket end for the pipe and a spigot end that fuses directly into another fitting or valve, rated PN25 to EN ISO 15874-3, in Ø20 and Ø25.

The PPR Elbow 45° f/m is a 45° bend for PP-R pipelines with one female and one male end. The pipe fuses into the socket end. The spigot end fuses directly into the socket of another fitting or a valve, so the line changes direction by 45° with no extra piece of pipe. This keeps the turn short, which is useful where a pipe has to cross or pass close to another line and there is no room for a gradual bend. The fitting is made of PP-R, rated PN25 and conforms to EN ISO 15874-3, the standard for polypropylene fittings in hot and cold water installations. Its operating temperature is 70 °C, with a maximum of 95 °C. It comes in Ø20 and Ø25, in white or grey, as part of the THERMALINO Eternal line of PPR fittings. It is used in drinking water and domestic hot water lines, in heating circuits that stay within its temperature limits, and in other water lines in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Before you use it for anything other than water, check the medium against the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheet. Pressure ratings at different temperatures are also given there. Both ends are joined by socket fusion with a standard PP-R welding tool. Each joint is made the same way as any other socket fusion joint, with the heating time, insertion depth and cooling time set by the pipe diameter. The spigot end is heated on the socket side of the heating tool, then pushed into the socket of the mating fitting or valve.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water lines in houses and apartment buildings
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Central heating circuits, within the operating temperature of 70 °C and maximum of 95 °C
  • Short offsets where a line has to cross or pass close to another pipe
  • Direct connections to valves and fittings with no extra piece of pipe
  • Industrial process water and cooling water lines, within the pressure and temperature ratings
  • Chemical lines, subject to the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheet
  • Irrigation, greenhouse and agricultural water lines

Questions

Which size of PPR elbow 45 f/m should I order for a domestic water line that the plans describe as 3/4 inch?
For a line described as 3/4 inch, the Ø25 PPR Elbow 45° f/m is normally the right size, because PP-R pipe is sized by its outside diameter in millimetres. In the trade, Ø25 PP-R pipe is usually called 3/4 inch. The elbow also comes in Ø20, the next size down. Always match the elbow to the outside diameter printed on the pipe.
When should a plumber use a 45° PPR elbow with one spigot end instead of a 45° elbow with two sockets?
Use the PPR Elbow 45° f/m when the turn has to go straight into another fitting or a valve. Its spigot end fuses directly into that component's socket, with no piece of pipe in between. This keeps the offset short, so it suits tight spots where a line has to cross or pass close to another pipe. Where pipe is joined to both ends of the turn, use an elbow with two sockets.
Can the PPR elbow 45 f/m be used on hot water and central heating lines in a residential building?
Yes. The PPR Elbow 45° f/m is suitable for domestic hot water and central heating lines, as long as the system stays within its rated pressure and temperature. It is rated PN25 to EN ISO 15874-3, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. The allowed pressure falls as the temperature rises. The full table of pressures at each temperature is in the technical data sheet.
How is the spigot end of a PPR elbow 45 joined to a valve or tee when installing a PP-R water system?
The spigot end of the PPR Elbow 45° f/m is joined by socket fusion, fused directly into the socket of the valve or tee. Heat the spigot on the socket side of the heating tool and the valve or tee socket on the spigot side. Then push them together without twisting, and hold them until the joint has cooled. Heating and cooling times depend on the diameter and follow the welding tool's tables.
