Eternal line

PPR Elbow 90° f/f

Two fusion sockets: joins pipe to pipe, no threaded end

Both ends are female sockets that take PP-R pipe of the same diameter directly by socket fusion. Where the line must connect to a tap, valve or threaded component, a PPR fitting with a threaded insert is needed at that point.

Description and application

The PPR Elbow 90° f/f is a socket fusion fitting that turns a PP-R pipeline through a right angle, with two female sockets that take pipe of the same diameter. Rated PN25 and made to EN ISO 15874-3, it is used in hot and cold water and heating lines from Ø20 to Ø63.

The PPR elbow 90° f/f from the THERMALINO Eternal line turns a PP-R pipeline through a right angle. It is fitted at every corner, riser and change of route in a building's water network, which makes it one of the fittings an installer uses most often in a PP-R installation. Both ends are female sockets, so pipe of the same diameter enters the fitting directly on each side. It is made of PP-R to EN ISO 15874-3, the part of the standard covering polypropylene fittings for hot and cold water installations. With nominal pressure PN25, operating temperature 70 °C and maximum temperature 95 °C, it serves hot water and central heating lines as well as cold water supply. The range covers Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50 and Ø63, in white, grey and green, so the elbow can match the pipe used on site. The elbow is joined by socket fusion. The pipe is cut square and cleaned, the pipe end and the fitting socket are heated together on a fusion welder fitted with heads of the right diameter, and the pipe is pushed straight into the socket without twisting. Once cooled, pipe and fitting form a single homogeneous joint, with no threads, sealant or cement. Heating, joining and cooling times depend on the diameter and follow the welding tool's table. Where the line meets a tap or valve, a PPR fitting with a threaded insert is used at that point. Pressure ratings at each temperature and service life, and the dimensions of each size, are in the technical data sheet.

Questions

What is a PPR elbow 90° f/f and where is it fitted in a domestic hot and cold water installation?
A PPR elbow 90° f/f is a PP-R socket fusion fitting that turns a pipeline through a right angle, with a female socket at each end for pipe of the same diameter. The THERMALINO PPR Elbow 90° f/f is rated PN25, made to EN ISO 15874-3 and available from Ø20 to Ø63; it is fitted at corners, risers and every change of route in the hot and cold water network.
Which PPR elbow size should I order for a 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch branch line feeding a bathroom?
In PP-R trade usage a 1/2 inch PPR elbow is the Ø20 size and a 3/4 inch PPR elbow is the Ø25, or 25mm, size, because PP-R is sized by the outside diameter of the pipe in millimetres. These inch names are nominal trade equivalents, not thread sizes: the PPR Elbow 90° f/f has fusion sockets on both ends and is offered in Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50 and Ø63. Stating the diameter in millimetres on the order avoids confusion, as inch labels vary between markets.
Can a PPR elbow be used on a central heating radiator circuit or a hot water line running at 70 °C?
Yes, the PPR Elbow 90° f/f is rated PN25 and is suitable for hot water and central heating lines as well as cold water. Its operating temperature is 70 °C and its maximum temperature 95 °C. The permitted pressure at each temperature and service life is given in the technical data sheet, and the pipe in the same line should carry a matching rating.
How is a PPR elbow joined to PP-R pipe when installing a new hot and cold water line in an apartment?
A PPR elbow is joined to PP-R pipe by socket fusion: the pipe end and the elbow socket are heated together on a fusion welder with heads of the matching diameter, then the pipe is pushed straight into the socket without twisting and held until the joint sets. Pipe and fitting then form one homogeneous joint without threads, sealant or cement. Heating, joining and cooling times depend on the diameter and follow the welding tool's table.
Can a 90° PPR elbow with two female sockets connect directly to a tap, valve or threaded boiler connection?
No, the PPR Elbow 90° f/f joins PP-R pipe to PP-R pipe only, because both of its ends are female fusion sockets. Where the line meets a tap, valve or other threaded component, a PPR fitting with a threaded insert is fused into the line at that point.
Should I use a PPR elbow or a PVC elbow on a pipeline that carries hot water in a house?
For a hot water line a PPR elbow is the suitable choice: the PPR Elbow 90° f/f is rated PN25 with operating temperature 70 °C and maximum temperature 95 °C. PVC pressure fittings are generally intended for cold water service and are joined with solvent cement, whereas PP-R is joined by socket fusion, so the two materials are not joined to each other by fusion.
