PPR Elbow with loose nut

The nut turns, the fitting stays fixed

The PP-R body is fused to the pipe and stays where it is; the connection is made by turning only the brass nut onto the male G thread of the appliance. The joint seals on the gasket inside the nut, not on the parallel thread, so it suits connections where the fitting itself cannot be rotated.

Description and application

The PPR Elbow with loose nut is a 90° PP-R fitting that joins a PP-R pipe by socket fusion to a male G (BSP parallel) thread through a free-turning brass CW617N nut with a sealing gasket. It is used mainly to connect combi and gas boilers, water heaters and other appliances where the fitting cannot be turned to tighten a thread.

The PPR Elbow with loose nut turns a PP-R line through 90° and ends in a female thread carried by a free-turning brass nut. It is intended for the point where a PP-R installation meets an appliance with a male thread, typically a combi or gas boiler, a water heater or another device whose connections sit close to the wall. The body is made of PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer, type 3) to EN ISO 15874-3, nominal pressure PN20, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum temperature of 95 °C. The nut is brass CW617N with a G (BSP parallel) female thread. The elbow is available in Ø20x1/2", Ø25x1/2", Ø25x3/4" and Ø32x1", in white, and fuses fully with THERMALINO PP-R pipes of the same diameter. On the plastic side, the pipe is joined by socket fusion with a standard PP-R welding machine, so the elbow becomes part of the pipeline. On the metal side, the nut moves freely on the body: the installer places the elbow against the appliance connection and tightens only the nut. Because the thread is parallel, the seal is made by the gasket inside the nut pressing against the face of the male end, not by the thread itself. This makes the fitting the practical choice wherever a threaded fitting cannot be screwed in by rotating it on its own axis, for example after the pipe has already been fused in place, and it allows the appliance to be disconnected later for service or replacement.

Where it is used
  • Combi and gas boiler connections in heating and domestic hot water installations
  • Water heater and storage cylinder connections
  • Hot and cold drinking water installations in houses and apartment buildings
  • Heating circuits within the pressure and temperature limits in the technical data sheet
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Transitions from PP-R pipe to brass or metal equipment with a male G thread
  • Cooling water lines, subject to the pressure and temperature table in the technical data sheet

Questions

Why would an installer choose a PPR elbow with loose nut instead of a fixed female threaded elbow when connecting a combi boiler?
A PPR elbow with loose nut lets the installer tighten only the brass nut onto the boiler's male G thread while the fused PP-R body stays fixed. A fixed female threaded elbow has to be rotated on its own axis, which is not possible once the pipe is fused in place or the boiler connections sit close to the wall. The loose nut also allows the boiler to be disconnected later for service.
Can the PPR elbow with loose nut be used on the hot water and heating flow lines of a gas boiler in a house?
The PPR elbow with loose nut can be used on hot water and heating lines within its rating: PP-R to EN ISO 15874-3, nominal pressure PN20, operating temperature 70 °C and maximum temperature 95 °C. The permissible pressure at a given temperature and service life is given in the technical data sheet, which should be checked against the design conditions of the system.
Does the PPR elbow with loose nut need PTFE tape or thread sealant on the BSP parallel thread of a water heater?
The PPR elbow with loose nut seals on the gasket inside its brass nut, not on the thread, so the G (BSP parallel) thread is not what makes the joint watertight. The gasket must be in place and seated correctly against the face of the male end; the nut is then tightened onto the appliance connection.
How is the PPR elbow with loose nut joined to PP-R pipe, and which pipe sizes and thread sizes are available?
The PPR elbow with loose nut is joined to PP-R pipe by socket fusion, using a PP-R welding machine and the heating tools for the pipe diameter. It is available in Ø20x1/2", Ø25x1/2", Ø25x3/4" and Ø32x1", where the first figure is the pipe outside diameter in mm and the second the G thread size of the brass nut.
