Eternal line

PPR End cap

A permanent closure: the line is cut behind the cap to extend it

Socket fusion makes the end cap part of the pipe, so it cannot be unscrewed or reused. To extend the line later, the installer cuts the pipe behind the cap and fuses on a new fitting. Where the pipe end has to be opened again, use a threaded closure instead.

Description and application

The THERMALINO PPR end cap is a socket fusion fitting in PP-R that permanently closes the open end of a PP-R pipe in hot and cold water and heating installations. It is rated PN25, conforms to EN ISO 15874-3 and comes in sizes Ø20 to Ø63.

The PPR end cap from the THERMALINO Eternal line closes the open end of a PP-R pipe. It is used at the top of a riser, at the end of a distribution line and on branches left for a future extension. It comes in sizes Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50 and Ø63, in white, grey and green, so it can match the colour of the pipework. The cap is made from prime-grade polypropylene random copolymer (PP-R, type 3) and conforms to EN ISO 15874-3, the standard for polypropylene fittings in hot and cold water installations. Its nominal pressure is PN25. The operating temperature is 70 °C and the maximum temperature is 95 °C. Pressure ratings at other temperatures and service lives are given in the technical data sheet. The cap is joined by socket fusion. The pipe end and the cap socket are heated together on a socket fusion welding machine and pushed together, which makes a single, homogeneous joint with no seal or thread to work loose. The PP-R material fuses cleanly with THERMALINO PP-R pipes, which gives a uniform weld and a long service life. Follow the heating times and insertion depths in the welding table. Choose a ppr cap of the same diameter as the pipe, and for a pressure class that the line requires. Because the joint is permanent, the cap cannot be taken off and refitted. To extend the line, the installer cuts the pipe behind the cap and fuses on a new fitting.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water installations in residential and commercial buildings
  • Central heating lines, within the operating temperature of 70 °C and maximum of 95 °C
  • Tops of risers and ends of distribution lines
  • Branch lines closed for a future extension
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and multi-storey residential buildings
  • Cooling and chilled water lines
  • Irrigation and agricultural water lines
  • Compressed air and industrial process lines, subject to the pressure-temperature and chemical resistance tables in the technical data sheet

Questions

What is the purpose of a PPR end cap at the end of a hot or cold water line in a building?
A PPR end cap permanently seals the open end of a PP-R pipe, so the line stays watertight and keeps its pressure. It is used at the top of a riser, at the end of a distribution line or on a branch left for a later connection. The THERMALINO cap is rated PN25 and conforms to EN ISO 15874-3.
How do I choose the right size of PPR pipe end cap for an existing PP-R pipe in a plumbing installation?
A PPR pipe end cap is chosen by the outside diameter of the pipe, because the socket of a socket fusion cap is made for one pipe diameter. Measure the outside diameter of the pipe and choose the cap of the same nominal size. The THERMALINO range covers Ø20, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40, Ø50 and Ø63.
Can a PN25 PPR end cap be used on a domestic hot water or central heating line, and what temperatures apply?
Yes, the THERMALINO PPR end cap is rated PN25 and suits hot water and heating lines, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. The allowable pressure falls as the temperature rises, so check the pressure-temperature table in the technical data sheet against the system's conditions. The pipe and the cap should be of a class that the line requires.
How is a PPR end cap joined to a PP-R pipe, and can it be removed later if the line has to be extended?
A PPR end cap is joined by socket fusion, and the joint is permanent, so the cap cannot be unscrewed or reused. A qualified installer heats the pipe end and the cap socket on a socket fusion machine and pushes them together, following the heating times and insertion depths in the welding table. To extend the line, the pipe is cut behind the cap and a new fitting is fused on.
What is the difference between a socket fusion PPR cap and a threaded end cap in a PP-R plumbing system?
A socket fusion PPR cap is welded onto the pipe and makes a permanent closure, while a threaded end cap screws onto a male thread and can be removed. The THERMALINO end cap is a socket fusion fitting. It suits pipe ends that stay closed, such as risers and capped branches. A threaded closure is used where the end has to be opened again, for example on a fixture connection waiting for its tap.
