PPR Male adaptor hexagonal

Tighten on the brass hexagon, never on the PP-R body

In front of the thread, the brass insert has a hexagon that takes a spanner. Holding the adaptor by this hexagon puts the tightening torque into the metal, so a large thread can be made up firmly without straining the bond between the brass insert and the PP-R body.

Description and application

The PPR male threaded adaptor hexagonal is a transition fitting. One end is socket-fused onto PP-R pipe and the other has a brass CW617N BSP parallel (G) male thread that screws into a female-threaded valve, fitting or metal pipe. It is made to EN ISO 15874-3, rated PN25 and available from Ø40x1.1/4" to Ø90x3".

The PPR male threaded adaptor hexagonal from the Eternal line joins a PP-R pipeline to any component with a female thread. One end is a socket for fusion welding onto the pipe. The other end is a brass male thread with a hexagon in front of it. It comes in five sizes, from Ø40x1.1/4" to Ø90x3", in white. The body is PP-R, a random polypropylene copolymer (type 3) made from prime-grade raw material, and the fitting is made to EN ISO 15874-3. It fuses with THERMALINO PP-R pipes into a durable joint built for a long service life. The threaded insert is CW617N brass with a lead content below 2.2 %. The adaptor is rated PN25, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. Permissible pressures at each temperature and service life are given in the technical data sheet. The fitting is used wherever PP-R pipework meets a metal or threaded component: valves, pumps, water meters, manifolds, water heaters, storage tanks and existing steel pipework in hot and cold drinking water and heating installations. Because it has a male thread, it screws straight into a female-threaded fitting without an extra nipple. Installation is in two steps. The PP-R socket is joined to the pipe by socket fusion using a PP-R welding tool. The thread is BSP parallel (G), also known as gas thread, and is sealed with a thread sealant suitable for the medium. While the thread is tightened, the brass hexagon is held with a spanner so that the joint between metal and plastic is not loaded. The thread suits BSP female fittings only and does not mate with NPT threads.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water distribution in residential and commercial buildings
  • Central heating pipework, within the PN25 rating, operating temperature 70 °C and maximum 95 °C
  • Connections to valves, pumps, water meters, manifolds, water heaters and storage tanks
  • Transitions from PP-R to existing threaded steel or galvanised pipework in renovation
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Industrial plant water and cooling water lines, subject to the pressure-temperature table in the technical data sheet
  • Irrigation, agriculture and livestock water supply
  • Process lines carrying other media, subject to the chemical resistance of both PP-R and brass

Questions

How do you connect new PP-R plastic pipe to existing galvanised steel pipe in an older building's water supply?
A PPR male threaded adaptor connects PP-R pipe to galvanised steel pipe: it is fused onto the PP-R pipe and screwed into a female thread on the steel side, such as a socket, tee or valve. The THERMALINO adaptor has a CW617N brass BSP parallel (G) male thread, so the steel fitting must also have a BSP thread. NPT threads have a different form and do not mate with it. If the steel pipe ends in a male thread, a female-threaded steel socket is fitted first. The thread is sealed with a sealant suitable for the medium and tightened by the brass hexagon.
Which PP-R pipe diameter matches each thread size of the PPR male threaded adaptor, for example for a 2 inch valve?
Each size of the PPR male threaded adaptor pairs one PP-R pipe diameter with one BSP thread size, so for a 2" valve you use the Ø63x2" adaptor. The range is Ø40x1.1/4", Ø50x1.1/2", Ø63x2", Ø75x2.1/2" and Ø90x3". The first figure is the outside diameter of the PP-R pipe in millimetres and the second is the nominal size of the male thread.
Can the PPR male threaded adaptor be used on central heating and domestic hot water lines in a commercial building?
The PPR male threaded adaptor is suitable for domestic hot water and central heating within its rating: PN25, operating temperature 70 °C, maximum temperature 95 °C. It is made to EN ISO 15874-3. The permissible pressure falls as the temperature and required service life rise, so the line should be checked against the pressure-temperature table in the technical data sheet.
How should the BSP parallel thread of a large PPR male threaded adaptor be sealed and tightened onto a brass valve?
The BSP parallel thread of the PPR male threaded adaptor is sealed with a thread sealant suitable for the medium, such as PTFE tape or a sealing compound, and tightened with a spanner on the brass hexagon. Holding the hexagon puts the torque into the CW617N brass insert rather than the PP-R body, so a large thread can be made up firmly without straining the metal-plastic joint. Pipe wrenches should not grip the plastic body.
Can a PPR male threaded adaptor be removed and reused after it has been fused onto a pipe during a plumbing alteration?
A PPR male threaded adaptor cannot be reused once its socket has been fused to a pipe, because socket fusion makes a permanent joint. The threaded end can be unscrewed from the mating fitting. To change the PP-R side, a qualified installer cuts the pipe behind the joint and fuses on a new adaptor.
