PPR Male filter 45° f/m

Keep the 45° cleaning leg accessible and pointing down

Dirt held back by the mesh screen settles in the 45° leg and is removed by opening the blind cap during system maintenance. In a horizontal line, install the filter with this leg pointing downwards and leave enough room around it to open the cap. Before the cap is opened, the line must be isolated and depressurised by a qualified installer.

Description and application

The PPR Male filter 45° f/m is a PP-R strainer fitting for Ø20 and Ø25 water lines that traps coarse dirt on a stainless steel mesh screen, with a socket fusion end on one side and a CW617N brass male BSP thread on the other. Dirt settles in the 45° leg and is removed through a blind cap during routine maintenance.

The PPR Male filter 45° f/m is a strainer fitting from the Smart line of THERMALINO PP-R pipeline systems, also known as a dirt trap. A stainless steel mesh screen inside the body holds back coarse particles such as sand, scale and installation debris before they reach meters, valves, pumps or appliances further down the line. The dirt collects in the angled 45° leg, which is closed with a blind cap and cleaned out when the installation is serviced. The body is made of PP-R, from prime grade polypropylene random copolymer (type 3), to EN ISO 15874-3, with nominal pressure PN25, operating temperature 70 °C and maximum temperature 95 °C. The threaded insert is CW617N brass with a lead content below 2.2 %. The fitting is available in Ø20 and Ø25, in white. It joins the pipeline in two ways. The PP-R end is a socket that is socket fusion welded onto PP-R pipe with a standard welding machine and heating tools, and it is designed to weld with THERMALINO PP-R pipes for a homogeneous, long-lasting joint. The brass end carries a male BSP parallel thread, also called gas thread, which screws into a female BSP connection on a valve, meter, pump or other threaded component, so the filter also serves as the transition from the PP-R line to threaded equipment. The filter is used in hot and cold drinking water and heating installations in residential and commercial buildings. Pressure ratings at different temperatures and service lives are given in the technical data sheet.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water installations, upstream of water meters, pressure reducing valves and pumps
  • Protection of boilers, water heaters and heat pump connections from dirt and scale
  • Central heating circuits, within the operating temperature of 70 °C and maximum of 95 °C
  • Apartments, houses and villas
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Irrigation and agricultural water supply lines
  • Cooling water and industrial water lines, within the pressure and temperature limits in the technical data sheet
  • Chemical and process lines, subject to the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheet

Questions

Where should a PPR male filter 45° be installed in a hot and cold water system to protect water meters, pressure reducing valves and pumps?
The PPR male filter 45° should be installed upstream of the component it protects, so the water passes through the stainless steel mesh screen before it reaches a meter, pressure reducing valve, pump or appliance. Its male BSP thread lets it screw directly into the female inlet of such a component, while the PP-R end is socket fusion welded to the supply pipe. Leave enough space around the 45° leg so the blind cap can be opened during maintenance.
Which way should the 45° leg of a PPR filter fitting point when it is fitted in a horizontal water supply line in a house?
The 45° leg of the PPR male filter should point downwards in a horizontal line, so that dirt held back by the mesh screen settles in the leg instead of being carried back into the flow. Install the fitting so the water enters through the screen and the collected dirt stays in the leg, and keep the blind cap reachable for cleaning.
How is the PPR male filter 45° f/m joined to PP-R pipe on one side and to threaded fittings or equipment on the other?
The PPR male filter 45° f/m is joined by socket fusion welding on its PP-R end and by a male BSP parallel thread on its CW617N brass end. The PP-R socket is welded onto Ø20 or Ø25 PP-R pipe with a socket fusion machine, and the BSP thread, also called gas thread, screws into a female BSP connection. The thread size for each diameter is given in the technical data sheet.
What pressure and temperature can a PPR male filter 45° handle in a domestic hot water or central heating installation?
The PPR male filter 45° is rated PN25, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum temperature of 95 °C, which makes it suitable for hot and cold water and heating lines. It is made of PP-R to EN ISO 15874-3. The permissible pressure falls as the temperature rises, so the pressure-temperature table in the technical data sheet should be checked for the design conditions.
How often does the mesh screen in a PPR filter fitting need cleaning, and how is the trapped dirt removed safely?
The PPR male filter needs cleaning at the system's routine maintenance intervals, more often where the water carries a lot of sand or scale or after new pipework has been flushed. The dirt is removed by opening the blind cap on the 45° leg. Because the line is under pressure, a qualified installer first isolates and depressurises the section before opening the cap, then checks the screen and reseals the cap.
