PPR Radiator ball valve elbow

Tail and union nut: connected to the radiator without turning the valve body

On the radiator side, the valve has a tail with a BSP parallel (G) male thread and a union nut. The installer screws the tail into the radiator first, then pulls the valve onto it with the nut. The valve body never has to be turned on its axis, so the socket fusion joint on the pipe side stays aligned.

Description and application

The PPR radiator ball valve elbow is an angled quarter-turn shut-off valve that connects a PP-R heating pipe to a radiator. It has a socket fusion end for the pipe and a BSP parallel (G) male-threaded tail with union nut for the radiator. Rated PN25, it isolates each radiator for maintenance or replacement.

The PPR radiator ball valve elbow is an angled shut-off valve for radiator connections in PP-R heating installations. One end is a socket fusion end for 20 mm or 25 mm PP-R pipe. The other end is a male-threaded radiator tail with a union nut. The angled body brings the pipe from the wall or floor straight to the radiator connection, and a quarter turn of the ball opens or closes the flow. The body is PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer, type 3) made from prime-grade raw material. It is designed to fuse with THERMALINO PP-R pipes into a homogeneous joint that is suited to long service. The threaded insert is CW617N brass, with lead content within the European limit for this alloy (at most 2.2 %). The thread is BSP parallel, also known as G thread. The valve is made to EN ISO 16135 and rated PN25, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. Pressure and temperature values over the service life are in the technical data sheet. The valve is joined to the pipe by socket fusion with a standard PP-R welding tool, at the welding times for the pipe size. The tail is sealed into the radiator boss with a sealant suitable for heating water. The union nut then draws the valve onto the tail, so the body is never turned after welding. It is available as Ø20 × 1/2", Ø25 × 1/2" and Ø25 × 3/4", in white or grey.

Questions

Are angled radiator ball valves universal, or does a PPR radiator ball valve elbow only fit certain radiators and pipe sizes?
The PPR radiator ball valve elbow is not universal: it fits radiators with a 1/2" or 3/4" BSP parallel (G) connection, fed by 20 mm or 25 mm PP-R pipe. The sizes are Ø20 × 1/2", Ø25 × 1/2" and Ø25 × 3/4". The first figure is the PP-R pipe diameter for the socket fusion end, and the second is the thread of the radiator tail. An angled valve suits pipes that come out of the wall or floor at right angles to the radiator connection.
How do I choose the right PPR radiator ball valve elbow for a radiator fed by 20 mm or 25 mm PP-R heating pipe?
Choose the PPR radiator ball valve elbow by two measurements: the outside diameter of the PP-R pipe (Ø20 or Ø25) and the radiator connection thread (1/2" or 3/4" BSP parallel). For example, a 25 mm pipe feeding a 1/2" radiator connection needs the Ø25 × 1/2" valve. Also check the heating system against the valve's rating: PN25, operating temperature 70 °C, maximum 95 °C. The valve comes in white or grey to match the installation.
What should be used instead of PTFE tape to seal the tail of a PPR radiator ball valve elbow into a radiator with a parallel thread?
The tail of the PPR radiator ball valve elbow has a BSP parallel (G) thread, so a reliable seal into the radiator comes from a thread sealant suitable for central heating water rather than from the thread itself. Installers commonly use a liquid or anaerobic thread sealant, or a thread-sealing cord. Where the radiator connection has a flat seat, a sealing washer can be used. The joint between the tail and the valve body is made by the union nut and its mating faces, so no tape goes on that thread. The sealant must suit both the operating temperature of 70 °C and the maximum of 95 °C.
How can I tell whether the PPR radiator ball valve elbow on a heating radiator is open or closed?
The PPR radiator ball valve elbow is a quarter-turn valve: a 90° turn of the handle moves it between fully open and fully closed. On ball valves, the handle normally lies along the flow path when the valve is open and across it when closed. If a radiator stays cold with the valve open, the cause may be trapped air, an unbalanced system or a blockage. A qualified heating installer should check and correct this, because the system is under pressure.
