PPR Reduction f↓/m↑

One socket end, one spigot end: it fuses into a fitting or valve, not between two pipes

This reduction has a female socket on one end that takes the pipe and a male spigot on the other that is fused into the socket of another fitting or a valve. To join two pipes of different sizes directly, a reduction coupling is used, which has sockets on both ends.

Description and application

The PPR reducing socket (reduction f/m) from the THERMALINO Eternal line changes the pipe size in a PP-R line: one end is a socket that takes the smaller pipe, the other a spigot that fuses straight into a fitting or valve. It is PN25, socket fusion, to EN ISO 15874-3, and comes in sizes from Ø25x20 to Ø63x50.

The PPR Reduction f/m is a PPR reducing socket for changing the line size in PP-R hot and cold water and heating installations. One end is a female socket that takes the pipe. The other end is a male spigot, and it is fused into the socket of another fitting, such as a tee, elbow or valve. Because of this, a separate reduction coupling and a short length of pipe are not needed where the line steps down at a fitting. It is made from prime-grade PP-R (polypropylene random copolymer, type 3) to EN ISO 15874-3. It is rated PN25, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum temperature of 95 °C. Permissible pressures at different temperatures and service lives are listed in the technical data sheet. It is made for socket fusion with THERMALINO PP-R pipes and fittings, and the fused joint is uniform and long-lasting. The range covers every common step from Ø25x20 up to Ø63x50, including Ø32x20, Ø40x25, Ø50x32 and Ø63x40. Colours are white, grey and green, to match the pipe used on site. Installation follows standard socket fusion practice. The pipe end and the inside of the socket are heated together on the welding tool, and so are the spigot and the socket of the fitting it goes into. Each joint is then pushed together straight, with no twisting, and left to cool before the line is pressurised. Heating, joining and cooling times for each diameter come from the welding table for the pipe system and the welding machine.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water lines in residential buildings
  • Central heating and radiator connections, within the PN25 rating at an operating temperature of 70 °C, maximum 95 °C
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Risers and distribution manifolds that step down to branch and appliance lines
  • Cooling water and chilled water lines
  • Compressed air and industrial plant lines, subject to the pressure and temperature table in the technical data sheet
  • Chemical and process lines, subject to the chemical resistance table in the technical data sheet
  • Irrigation, agricultural water lines and shipboard water systems

Questions

What is the difference between a PPR reducing socket with female and male ends and a PPR reduction coupling when stepping down pipe size?
A PPR reducing socket with female and male ends takes a pipe in its socket and is fused into another fitting or valve with its spigot, while a reduction coupling has sockets on both ends and joins two pipes. Use the THERMALINO Reduction f/m where the line steps down right at a tee, elbow or valve. That way the joint is made without an extra coupling and a short piece of pipe.
What is a PPR reducing socket used for in a water supply line that goes from a larger riser to smaller branch pipes?
A PPR reducing socket connects a smaller PP-R pipe to a fitting or valve of a larger size, so a riser or main line can step down to branch and appliance lines. The THERMALINO range goes from Ø25x20 to Ø63x50, which covers the usual steps from main lines down to 20 mm connections.
Can a PN25 PPR reducing socket be used on hot water and central heating lines in an apartment building?
Yes, the THERMALINO PPR reducing socket is rated PN25 and can be used on hot water and heating lines, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum temperature of 95 °C. It conforms to EN ISO 15874-3. The permissible pressure falls as temperature and service life go up, so check the pressure and temperature table in the technical data sheet when designing the system.
How is a PPR reducing socket installed by socket fusion when it goes directly into a tee or a valve?
A PPR reducing socket is installed with two socket fusion joints: the pipe is fused into its socket, and its spigot is fused into the socket of the tee or valve. For each joint, both parts are heated together on the welding tool and then pushed together straight, with no twisting. The joint is left to cool before pressure is applied. Heating and cooling times for each diameter come from the welding table.
How do I read a size such as Ø40x25 on a PPR reducing socket, and how is PPR pipe size measured?
On a PPR reducing socket, a size such as Ø40x25 gives the two pipe outside diameters in millimetres that the fitting connects, here 40 mm and 25 mm. PP-R pipe is sized by its outside diameter, so measure the outside of the pipe to choose the right size. The THERMALINO range runs from Ø25x20 to Ø63x50.
