PPR Transition union female

Detachable union: the threaded joint can be opened without cutting the pipe

The brass part carrying the female thread separates from the fused PP-R body, so the connection can be undone and remade later. This makes the fitting the right choice at points that may need changing or repair, such as towel radiators, expansion vessels and other serviceable connections.

Description and application

The PPR female union is a transition fitting that joins PP-R pipe by socket fusion to a male-threaded pipe, valve or appliance through a detachable CW617N brass part with a BSP parallel (G) female thread. Rated PN20 to EN ISO 15874-3, it serves hot and cold water and heating lines and can be disconnected later without cutting the pipe.

The PPR female union from the THERMALINO Eternal line is a transition fitting between a PP-R pipeline and threaded metal pipework or equipment. One end is a socket-fusion end for PP-R pipe; the other is a detachable brass part with a female thread, so the joint can be opened and closed again without cutting the pipe. It is available from Ø20x1/2" to Ø75x2.1/2". The body is made of PP-R, a type 3 polypropylene random copolymer, and the insert is CW617N brass. The fitting conforms to EN ISO 15874-3 and is rated PN20, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. Pressure values at other temperatures are given in the technical data sheet. The thread is BSP parallel (G), so the mating male thread must be BSP; a tapered NPT thread is not a match. The union is used wherever a threaded connection may need to come apart: towel radiators and radiators, expansion vessels, pumps, meters, filters and joints that may need repair access. It is also the usual way to move from PP-R to copper or steel pipework, which carry a male BSP adaptor on their side. The PP-R end is socket-fused to the pipe with a fusion welding tool, using the heating times and insertion depths for each diameter. A male thread is then screwed into the brass part and sealed with a suitable thread sealant, without overtightening. It is intended for fusion with THERMALINO PP-R pipes and fittings from the same system.

Where it is used
  • Hot and cold drinking water installations in homes and apartment buildings
  • Central heating connections to radiators and towel radiators
  • Connections to expansion vessels, pumps, meters and filters that may need removal
  • Transitions from PP-R to existing copper or steel threaded pipework
  • Hotels, hospitals, schools and office buildings
  • Chilled water and cooling water lines in building services and industrial plant
  • Irrigation and agricultural water supply lines
  • Process water lines, subject to the chemical resistance of PP-R and brass in the technical data sheet

Questions

What is a PPR female union, and when should a plumber fit one instead of a fixed female threaded adaptor on a water line?
A PPR female union is a transition fitting with a socket-fusion PP-R end and a detachable brass part carrying a female thread, fitted where a threaded connection may need to be opened later. Use it at towel radiators, expansion vessels, pumps, meters and joints that may need repair access, because the brass part can be undone without cutting the pipe. A fixed female adaptor suits connections that will stay closed for good.
Can I join PP-R plastic pipe to existing copper pipe in a house using a PPR female union on the hot water supply?
Yes, a PPR female union is a standard way to join PP-R pipe to copper pipe on hot and cold water lines. The PP-R end is socket-fused to the plastic pipe, and the copper side gets a male BSP (G) threaded adaptor that screws into the union's CW617N brass female thread. The union is rated PN20, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C. A qualified installer should make the joint and pressure-test it before the system goes into service.
Can copper be used to replace a damaged section of PPR pipe in a heating or hot water system, and how are the ends joined?
Copper can replace a section of PPR pipe when a threaded transition such as the PPR female union is fused onto the PP-R at each end. The copper section carries male BSP adaptors that screw into the brass female threads, and the unions let the section be removed again later. The copper joints and adaptors must suit the system's pressure and temperature, and the work should be done and pressure-tested by a qualified installer.
Which PPR female union size fits a 1 inch threaded connection, and how do the metric pipe sizes relate to the inch threads?
The PPR female union with a 1" BSP female thread comes in two sizes, Ø25x1" and Ø32x1", so the choice depends on the outside diameter of the PP-R pipe. The first figure is the pipe outside diameter in millimetres and the second is the thread size in inches. The full range is Ø20x1/2", Ø20x3/4", Ø25x1/2", Ø25x3/4", Ø25x1", Ø32x3/4", Ø32x1", Ø40x1.1/4", Ø50x1.1/2", Ø63x2" and Ø75x2.1/2".
Is a PN20 PPR female union suitable for central heating and domestic hot water lines running at around 70 °C?
Yes, the PPR female union is rated PN20 to EN ISO 15874-3, with an operating temperature of 70 °C and a maximum of 95 °C, which covers domestic hot water and central heating. The allowed working pressure falls as temperature and service life go up. Check the pressure-temperature table in the technical data sheet for the system's actual conditions.
