Description and application
The THERMALINO 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe is a PE-RT pipe for water-based underfloor heating, with the EVOH oxygen barrier enclosed between an inner and an outer PE-RT layer so that it keeps oxygen out of the closed heating circuit and is protected from scratches and abrasion on site. It is supplied in red, Ø16 to Ø25 mm, in coils of 200, 500 and 600 m.
The 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe in the Eternal line is a PE-RT pipe for water-based underfloor heating. PE-RT stands for polyethylene of raised temperature resistance. The pipe wall has five bonded layers: an inner PE-RT layer, an adhesive layer, the EVOH oxygen barrier, a second adhesive layer and an outer PE-RT layer. Because the barrier sits inside the wall rather than on the surface, it stays protected when coils are unrolled, pulled around corners and walked on before the screed goes down. Scratches, abrasion or peeling on the outer surface therefore do not reach the barrier. In a closed heating circuit, oxygen that passes through a pipe wall corrodes the steel and cast-iron parts of the system: the boiler heat exchanger, pumps, manifolds and radiators. This corrosion is a common source of rust and sludge in the water. The EVOH layer protects these components by limiting oxygen ingress. The pipe conforms to EN ISO 22391-2 and DIN 4726. It covers application classes 1, 2, 4 and 5, with a maximum operating pressure of 8 bar and a maximum operating temperature of 70 °C. The pipe is available in Ø16x2.0, Ø17x2.0, Ø20x2.0 and Ø25x2.3 mm, in 200, 500 and 600 m coils. With coils this long, each loop can run from the manifold supply to the return in a single length. Bends and turns are formed in the pipe itself, so the only joints are at the manifold. The pipe is fixed on clip rails, tacker systems or panel boards and connected with fittings that match its outside diameter and wall thickness. The installer pressure-tests the circuit before it is covered with screed.

Questions
- What is a PE-RT pipe, and why is it used for underfloor heating in homes and commercial buildings?
- A PE-RT pipe is a flexible heating pipe made of polyethylene of raised temperature resistance, and it is used for underfloor heating because it can be laid in long continuous loops. The THERMALINO 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe adds an EVOH oxygen barrier between two PE-RT layers. It conforms to EN ISO 22391-2 and DIN 4726, with a maximum operating pressure of 8 bar and a maximum operating temperature of 70 °C.
- Is PE-RT underfloor heating pipe the same material as polybutylene or HDPE used in older plumbing and drainage?
- PE-RT pipe is not polybutylene. It is a polyethylene grade made for raised temperatures, and it is specified for hot water and heating under EN ISO 22391-2, the standard this THERMALINO pipe conforms to. Ordinary HDPE pipes are usually made for cold water, gas or drainage. The 5-layer pipe also has an EVOH oxygen barrier, which plain polyethylene pipes do not have.
- Should I use 16 mm or 20 mm PE-RT pipe for underfloor heating in a house or a larger commercial floor?
- The THERMALINO 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe comes in Ø16x2.0, Ø17x2.0, Ø20x2.0 and Ø25x2.3 mm, and the heating design decides which size to use. That choice depends on the heat load, loop length and pressure drop. Smaller sizes are generally used for loops in rooms. Larger sizes suit bigger floor areas, longer loops or distribution lines. The loop calculation and the manifold design should be done before ordering.
- What causes rust and sludge in underfloor heating water, and can an oxygen barrier PE-RT pipe prevent it?
- Rust and sludge in underfloor heating water usually come from oxygen corroding the steel and cast-iron parts of the system. The 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe limits oxygen entering through the pipe wall. Its EVOH layer is enclosed beneath an outer PE-RT layer, so scratches made during installation do not expose it. If existing sludge, poor circulation or cold spots appear, a qualified heating installer should check and treat the system.
- What is the maximum loop length for an underfloor heating circuit laid with 16 mm or 20 mm PE-RT pipe?
- The maximum loop length for PE-RT underfloor heating pipe is set by the heating design, from the pipe size, the heat output and the pressure drop the circulating pump can handle. The THERMALINO 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe is supplied in 200, 500 and 600 m coils, so each designed loop can be laid in one continuous length from manifold supply to return.
- Can a damaged PE-RT underfloor heating pipe be repaired with a coupler that is buried under the screed?
- A damaged PE-RT underfloor heating pipe can only be joined under screed with a fitting its maker approves for embedding, and a qualified installer should make the repair. Any joint under the floor is a possible leak point. The 200, 500 and 600 m coils of the 5-Layer PE-RT EVOH Barrier pipe let each loop be laid without joints. The circuit is pressure-tested before the screed is laid.
