Brass underfloor heating manifold with integrated valves

No flow meters: loops are balanced with the integrated valves

This manifold has no flow meters, so you cannot read loop flow rates at the manifold. Each loop is set with the integrated valves to the flow rates in the system design, and you check the result from the loop temperatures once the system is running.

Description and application

The THERMALINO Eternal line brass underfloor heating manifold with integrated valves takes the flow from the heat source and sends it out to each underfloor heating loop. The valves let you open, close and set every loop at one point. It comes in 1" x 16 sizes from 2 to 8 ports.

The Eternal line underfloor heating manifold is a brass manifold with integrated valves. In a water-based floor heating system, it is the point where the flow from the heat source is split into the individual pipe loops, and where the return from each loop is collected before going back. Because all the loops start and end at one place, the system can be filled, purged, isolated and balanced from a single position. The body is brass. The range is listed as 1" x 16 and comes in 2 to 8 ports, so you choose the port count to match the number of loops in the floor layout. Colour options are red and blue. The manifold has no flow meters. Each loop is set with the integrated valves to the flow rates worked out in the heating design, and the full dimensions are in the technical data sheet. It can be used with a heat pump that runs at underfloor heating flow temperatures. It can also serve a boiler system, where a mixing valve and pump set brings the supply down to the temperature the floor is designed for. The manifold is usually fitted in a cabinet or on a wall at a central point of the floor area, with enough space left to reach it for service. The installer connects the flow and return from the heat source to the two bars and joins each loop to its own port pair. The system is then filled, purged loop by loop and pressure-tested before the screed is laid. Once the system is running, the integrated valves let a qualified installer isolate one loop without draining the rest of the system.

Questions

How do you balance the loops on an underfloor heating manifold that has integrated valves but no flow meters?
You balance the loops on the THERMALINO brass underfloor heating manifold by setting each integrated valve to the flow rate in the heating design. Longer loops usually need more opening than short ones. Because this manifold has no flow meters, the installer checks the result once the system is running by comparing flow and return temperatures and how evenly each room warms up, then fine-tunes the valves.
What flow rate should each underfloor heating loop on a brass manifold be set to in a new house installation?
The flow rate for each loop on an underfloor heating manifold comes from the heating design, not from the manifold. It depends on the loop length, the room's heat loss, the pipe spacing and the flow temperature. On the THERMALINO Eternal line manifold, which has no flow meters, the installer sets each integrated valve to these design figures and checks the floor temperatures once the system is running.
Do you need a mixing valve and pump set on an underfloor heating manifold when the boiler also feeds radiators?
Yes. An underfloor heating manifold fed by a boiler that also runs radiators normally needs a mixing valve and pump set, because the radiator flow temperature is higher than the floor is designed for. If a heat pump already runs at the underfloor heating flow temperature, it can often feed the manifold directly. The heating designer makes this decision for each system.
Does an underfloor heating manifold need a bypass valve when every loop is controlled by room thermostats and actuators?
An underfloor heating manifold often needs a bypass when all its loops can close at the same time, because the pump and heat source still need a minimum flow. Whether a bypass is needed, and where it goes, depends on the pump, the heat source and the controls. This is part of the system design and is fitted by the installer.
Why is part of my underfloor heating floor cold while the rest of the room is warm?
A cold area on an underfloor heating floor is usually caused by air trapped in that loop, a loop valve on the manifold that is closed or set too low, or flow that has not been balanced between the loops. On the THERMALINO manifold, a qualified heating installer checks the integrated valve for that loop, purges the circuit and rebalances the system. The system is under pressure, so this is not a job to do yourself.
Is an underfloor heating manifold better for floor loops than a copper header with tees?
An underfloor heating manifold suits floor loops better than a plain copper header with tees, because it gives every loop its own valve at one central point. On the THERMALINO brass manifold, the integrated valves let you isolate, purge and balance each loop separately. With tees alone, you cannot set or isolate individual loops.
