Description and application
The THERMALINO twin coil cylinder is an indirect water heater that stores domestic hot water and heats it through two separate coils, so two heat sources, such as a heat pump and a gas boiler or solar collectors and a boiler, can be connected without their circuits mixing. It comes in sizes from 100 L to 3000 L, for a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar and a maximum operating temperature of 95 °C.
The twin coil cylinder from the THERMALINO Eternal line keeps a large volume of domestic hot water ready for use at all times. Water from a heat source flows through a coil inside the tank and heats the stored water indirectly. The two coils are fully separate, so two different sources, for example a heat pump and a gas boiler, can each heat the same stored water without their circuits ever mixing. The inside of the tank has an epoxy resin coating approved by WRAS to BS 6920-1, so the water is safe for drinking water installations. It is supplied with a magnesium anode for extra corrosion protection and a pressure gauge already fitted. Rigid PU foam insulation keeps heat losses low, and the casing is navy. The tank's maximum operating pressure is 10 bar, its test pressure is 13 bar, and its maximum operating temperature is 95 °C. The cylinder works with heat pumps, gas boilers and solar thermal systems. As a solar hot water storage tank, it holds the heat the collectors produce during the day, and the second coil lets a boiler or heat pump top the water up when solar output falls short. An external electric heater can also be connected as a further back-up, which helps in areas without mains gas. Sizes run from 100 L to 3000 L, which covers anything from a single home to the shower demand of a hotel or hospital. A cleaning flange gives access to the inside of the tank for periodic cleaning and maintenance. Connection positions, coil data and dimensions for each size are in the technical data sheet. Installation and commissioning are carried out by a qualified installer.

Questions
- What is a twin coil cylinder, and which of its coils should a heat pump, a gas boiler or a solar circuit be connected to?
- A twin coil cylinder is an indirect water heater with two separate heat exchanger coils, so two heat sources can heat the same stored domestic hot water without their circuits mixing. The usual practice is to connect the lower-temperature source, such as solar collectors or a heat pump, to the lower coil, because that coil sits in the coldest water. The boiler goes on the upper coil and tops up the zone the hot water is drawn from. The THERMALINO twin coil cylinder comes in sizes from 100 L to 3000 L, with a maximum tank operating pressure of 10 bar and a maximum operating temperature of 95 °C. Connection positions are in the technical data sheet.
- If I install an indirect cylinder on a gas boiler system now and plan to add solar thermal panels later, do I need a twin coil cylinder?
- Yes. A twin coil cylinder is the practical choice when solar is planned for later, because the solar circuit can then be connected to the second coil without replacing the cylinder. Until then, the boiler heats the water through one coil and the other coil is left unconnected. Once the collectors are installed, a qualified installer connects the solar circuit with its own pump and controls.
- Can solar collectors and a boiler feed the same coil of an indirect hot water cylinder, or does each heat source need its own coil?
- Each heat source should have its own coil, which is why the THERMALINO twin coil cylinder has two independent coils that keep the solar and boiler circuits separate while both heat the same stored water. A solar circuit normally runs a water-glycol mixture with its own pump, controls, pressure and temperature. That makes joining it to the boiler circuit on one coil an unsound design.
- Can the solar coil of a twin coil cylinder in a house be heated by a solid fuel or wood boiler instead of solar panels?
- A solid fuel boiler may heat one coil of a twin coil cylinder only if the system designer confirms the coil rating and the circuit has the controls and safety devices local regulations require for a heat source that cannot be switched off instantly. A wood or solid fuel boiler keeps producing heat after the pump stops or the cylinder is already hot. The stored water must therefore never exceed the tank's maximum operating temperature of 95 °C or its maximum operating pressure of 10 bar. Coil ratings are in the technical data sheet, and the circuit is designed and installed by a qualified installer.
- What is the main disadvantage of a solar hot water system, and how does a twin coil cylinder make up for it at home?
- The main disadvantage of a solar hot water system is that its output depends on sunshine, so on cloudy days and in winter it cannot heat all the water needed on its own. A twin coil cylinder stores the solar heat through one coil, while a boiler or heat pump on the second coil brings the water up to the required temperature when solar output falls short. An external electric heater can also be connected to the THERMALINO twin coil cylinder as an extra back-up.
- Can a homeowner replace or service a twin coil hot water cylinder, for example change the anode or clean the tank, without calling an installer?
- No. A twin coil cylinder works under pressure and is connected to heating and water supply circuits, so replacing or servicing it is work for a qualified installer. The THERMALINO twin coil cylinder comes with a magnesium anode, which protects the tank and wears away over time, and a cleaning flange through which scale and sediment can be removed during periodic servicing. Discoloured or smelly hot water, leaks, or unusual readings on the supplied pressure gauge are signs that an installer should inspect it.
