Twin coil indirect water heater without cleaning flange

Tank rated for 10 bar maximum operating pressure

The tank has a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar and a test pressure of 13 bar. The cold water supply and the safety devices on the installation must keep the tank at or below 10 bar.

Description and application

The twin coil indirect water heater stores domestic hot water heated by two separate sources, such as a heat pump and a gas boiler or solar collectors, through two coils that keep the heating circuits apart. Its WRAS BS 6920-1 approved epoxy resin coating makes it suitable for drinking water installations, and it comes in sizes from 100 L to 3000 L.

The twin coil indirect water heater is a storage tank that heats domestic hot water indirectly. Water from a heat source circulates through a coil inside the tank and passes its heat to the stored water without the two mixing. Because it has two coils, the tank can be connected to two different heat sources at once, for example a heat pump and a gas boiler, or solar collectors and a boiler. Each source has its own circuit, so the circuits never mix. The inside of the tank is protected by an epoxy resin coating approved to WRAS BS 6920-1, which makes it suitable for drinking water installations. A magnesium anode and a pressure gauge come fitted as standard, and an electric heating element can be connected as an additional heat source. The tank is insulated with rigid PU foam or soft foam. It has a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar and a test pressure of 13 bar, and its maximum operating temperature is 95 °C. This version has no cleaning flange. This water heater is made for buildings that need a lot of hot water at the same moment, such as hotels, hospitals and schools where many showers run at once. It also suits large villas, mountain houses and holiday homes with several bathrooms. In areas without a gas supply, it lets you prepare and store hot water from whatever heat sources are available. The Smart line range runs from 100 L to 3000 L. Coil data, connection sizes and dimensions for each size are given in the technical data sheet. A qualified installer connects the tank to the heating circuits and the water supply.

Where it is used

Questions

Can a twin coil indirect water heater take heat from a heat pump and a gas boiler without the two heating circuits mixing?
Yes, the twin coil indirect water heater has two separate coils, so a heat pump and a gas boiler, or solar collectors and a boiler, can each heat the stored water through their own circuit without mixing. Each source can work alone or both can work together. The lower-temperature source is usually connected to the lower coil and the back-up source to the upper coil. Coil data for each size is given in the technical data sheet.
What pressure and temperature limits apply to the twin coil indirect water heater tank on a mains-fed domestic hot water system?
The twin coil indirect water heater tank has a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar, a test pressure of 13 bar and a maximum operating temperature of 95 °C. The cold supply and the safety devices on the installation must keep the tank at or below 10 bar. Pressure and temperature limits for the coils are given in the technical data sheet.
How should I size a twin coil indirect water heater for a hotel or a large villa where several showers run at the same time?
The size of a twin coil indirect water heater depends on how much hot water is drawn at the same time and how fast the connected heat sources can reheat the tank. The range runs from 100 L, 160 L, 200 L, 300 L, 400 L, 500 L and 800 L up to 1000 L, 1500 L, 2000 L, 2500 L and 3000 L. The larger sizes are meant for hotels, hospitals and schools, and the mid-range sizes for villas with several bathrooms. The heating engineer should check the coil output in the technical data sheet against the output of the heat sources.
Is the twin coil indirect water heater suitable for storing drinking water in hospitals, schools and homes?
Yes, the twin coil indirect water heater is suitable for drinking water installations because the inside of the tank is protected by an epoxy resin coating approved to WRAS BS 6920-1. A magnesium anode is fitted as standard as extra protection against corrosion.
Can an electric heating element be added to a twin coil indirect water heater as back-up when the boiler or heat pump is off?
Yes, an electric heating element can be connected to the twin coil indirect water heater as an additional heat source alongside its two coils. This keeps hot water available when the boiler or heat pump is off. Because this is electrical work on a pressurised tank, a qualified installer or electrician must fit and connect the element.
How can I tell that the magnesium anode in my indirect water heater is worn and needs to be replaced?
A worn magnesium anode in an indirect water heater often shows as discoloured or rusty hot water, a rotten-egg smell from the hot taps, or unusual noises when the tank heats up. The anode wears away on purpose to protect the tank, and how fast it wears depends on the local water quality. The tank is under pressure, so a qualified installer should check and replace the anode.
